Presentation of Dr. Jean-Marcel Ferret
Dr. Jean-Marcel Ferret, born in Lyon on December 16, 1947, is a reference in sports medicine in France. Team doctor for Olympique Lyonnais from 1976 to 2008 and for the French national football team from 1993 to 2004, he accompanied the rise of French football while developing a comprehensive medical approach focused on individualized athlete monitoring.
His achievements illustrate his commitment:
- World Champion with the French national team in 1998
- European Champion in 2000
- Seven consecutive French league titles with OL from 2002 to 2008
- Awarded the National Order of Merit in 1998
A FIFA Medical Instructor since 1992, he introduced modern monitoring protocols, including detailed medical records and a strong preventive approach. Dr. Ferret is also known for incorporating homeopathy into his practice, which he considers a complementary medical technique, similar to osteopathy, applied within a structured and personalized framework.
Interview with Dr. Jean-Marcel Ferret
How did you discover homeopathy and decide to integrate it into your practice ?
At the beginning of my career at OL, I quickly realized that the therapeutic arsenal available to a sports physician was very limited. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, painkillers, muscle relaxants, corticosteroid infiltrations in exceptional cases, with contraindications for some and limited effectiveness for others, not to mention ice and rest.
Two options emerged: either players take NSAIDs year-round, which is not desirable, or we rely heavily on rest, which is hardly compatible with high-level sport. The limitations of this symptomatic approach led me toward a more global approach:
- Identifying weaknesses through clinical, physiological, biological, and later psychological evaluations in order to correct them and prevent injuries
- Integrating mechanical techniques such as physiotherapy, kinesiology, isokinetic testing, as well as complementary techniques such as osteopathy and homeopathy
These last two emphasize an individualized approach. In my view, homeopathy enables treatment of the patient’s “terrain” rather than solely the symptom.
What concrete benefits do you observe ?
In my experience, homeopathy acts quickly and can be used on-field, for example Arnica. No known contraindications or side effects. I favored it for acute or chronic injuries, stress, sleep regulation, cramps, and recovery. Some athletes respond very well, others less so. Knowing the athlete’s profile is key.
Why did you publicly defend homeopathy ?
Medicine will never be entirely scientific. Treating only on the basis of statistical evidence risks overlooking individuality, demonstrated by genetics, epigenetics, and the physician-patient relationship. My intention has never been to oppose medical approaches. These are complementary techniques. The sports physician must achieve results while respecting medical ethics.
Does self-medication pose a risk ?
Certain homeopathic products can be used in self-medication, such as Arnica, Cuprum, or Gelsemium, but in my view effective terrain-based treatment requires supervision by a physician trained in homeopathy.
What message do you share with the next generation ?
The sports physician must remain open-minded, maintain critical thinking, continuously learn, and work within a multidisciplinary team. Athletes must surround themselves with trusted professionals to reduce diagnostic and therapeutic wandering as well as certain risks and deviations.
