Interview with Dr Michel Van Wassenhoven: understanding homeopathy in the light of scientific research

The DynHom project: a pioneering fundamental research

Dr Michel Van Wassenhoven has been a general practitioner since 1974 (UCL) and is among the most influential figures in homeopathy at the European and international levels. Admitted to the "Royal Belgian Society of Homeopathy" in 1981, he co-founded the "Unio Homeopathica Belgica" and its European federation, the "European Committee for Homeopathy (ECH)".

Throughout his career, he has held major strategic positions: former president of the registration commission for homeopathic medicines at the FAMHP (Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products in Belgium), member and coordinator of various international scientific research committees in homeopathy, notably within the "Liga Medicorum Homeopathica Internationalis (LMHI)".

Author of several reference works, including the renowned "Kent + Repertory" and "Homeopathy: complementarities", Dr Van Wassenhoven is also a prolific researcher with nearly 40 scientific publications and over 590 citations in academic literature.

An independent and innovative project

In 2014, Dr Van Wassenhoven launched the DynHom (dynamization & homeopathy) project — an independent research program aiming to answer a fundamental scientific question: “How do highly dynamized dilutions prepared according to the European homeopathic pharmacopoeia actually work?”

This extensive program, conducted in collaboration with French and Belgian university teams, builds upon the work of Prof Jean-Louis Demangeat and uses the most advanced technologies:

  • nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
  • nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA)
  • scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX)
  • infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy

Major discoveries: after eight years of research, DynHom has irrefutably demonstrated that:

  • homeopathic preparations are not merely water but structured solutions;
  • specific nanoparticles are present in all preparations, even beyond Avogadro’s number;
  • each homeopathic medicine has a unique physico-chemical “identity card”;
  • the process of dynamization (and not dilution alone) plays a crucial role.

These results, published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, represent a major breakthrough in ending the debate about the supposedly “empty” homeopathic medicine that would act only by placebo effect.

Dr Michel Van Wassenhoven answers our questions

Could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your background and what led you to homeopathy?

After seven years of medical studies, I was convinced that we could truly “heal” patients — meaning induce a return to full health without constant treatment. But this proved untrue for chronic diseases. When studying phytotherapy, I noticed fewer side effects but no more cures. A pharmacist then told me about homeopathy and put me in touch with Dr Maurice Jenaer, director of the Belgian school of homeopathy. I never “believed” in homeopathy, but the results I observed — even in so-called incurable diseases like ankylosing spondylitis — convinced me that this personalized, holistic approach allowed me to fulfill my vocation as a physician.

In 2014, you created the DynHom research project. What was your main goal and why was it important?

I had already collaborated with Professor Madeleine Bastide in Montpellier and met several renowned researchers such as Professor Montagnier. But it was Professor Marc Henry who helped me understand the coherence among all these findings by introducing quantum physics as an explanatory framework. Together, we decided to set up a research project using several complementary methods to determine the nature of homeopathic medicines and their mechanism of action.

Your research has shown that homeopathic medicines do contain matter, even in very high dilutions. Can you explain this simply and what it changes?

Indeed, it may seem unbelievable that homeopathic medicines, theoretically so diluted, still contain matter. But what we measure is a material trace and a specific electric field that amplifies during the dynamization process. We confirmed the work of Prof Jean-Louis Demangeat: homeopathic solutions are no longer pure water but structured water (or “morphogenic water”, according to Prof Marc Henry).

Our analyses show the presence of nanoparticles, soluble salts (bicarbonates, silicates, carbonates), specific pH levels, and characteristic UV wavelength emissions. These data make it impossible to claim that the homeopathic medicine is “empty” — and disprove the idea that it could act only through a placebo effect.

The main argument of skeptics is that “there’s nothing in homeopathic granules”. What is your response in light of your research?

Our work on granules will be published soon, once Professor Marc Henry’s electro-photonic analysis (EPA) method is validated in a scientific journal. The results will combine several approaches (NMR, NTA, SEM, EDX, FTIR, pH, EPA) into a coherent whole. To dispute this data, one would have to challenge all of quantum physics… good luck!

What research are you currently conducting, and what will the crowdfunding you are requesting be used for?

We are continuing our measurements on different dynamization series (NTA, SEM, EDX, FTIR, pH) and aim to build an improved prototype for EPA measurement. The original device created by Prof Marc Henry was dismantled, and this is the only technique that allows measurement of solid forms. That’s why every euro collected will be entirely dedicated to this project.

The DynHom project operates through crowdfunding and volunteer work. Why is it important to support this independent research?

In every publication, we must declare any potential conflicts of interest. Being funded by citizen donations — and not by pharmaceutical companies — ensures our scientific independence and the objectivity of our results.

What message would you like to share with patients who use homeopathy and those who question its effectiveness?

More and more homeopathic medicines are disappearing from the market for profitability reasons. Our research could help persuade lawmakers to relax certain rules — particularly concerning expiration dates — that have no scientific basis. Questioning a treatment’s effectiveness is legitimate, but rejecting homeopathy outright without examining the evidence is a mistake. Scientific proof now exists: it is no longer possible to say that these medicines contain nothing.

➡️ support independent DynHom research

The DynHom project operates thanks to the volunteer work of doctors, pharmacists and researchers, as well as donations from patients, practitioners and associations supporting homeopathy. This complete independence guarantees the scientific integrity of the research carried out.
